After a short introduction to support vector machines and kernel methods, I will review several applications in bioinformatics where these methods offer state-of-the-art performance, including sequence anotation and microarray data analysis.  I will then discuss the near future of these methods in terms of methodological developments and applications, as suggested by current trends in machine learning.
